Bikaner was established by a Rathore Prince Rao Bikaji in 1488 AD. He was a descendent of the founder of Jodhpur (1459 A.D.), Rao Jodhaji. Rao Jodhaji had five sons but Rao Bikaji was the most enterprising of them. Bikaji chose a barren wilderness called 'Jangladesh' and trandormerd it to an impressive city, called Bikaner after the founder's name. Bikaner is located in North West part of Rajasthan. The City is called the camel country; and famous for the best riding camels in the world. It has magnificent forts, palaces, and beautiful temples, signifying the rich heritage. Bikaner is also famous for its annual camel festival. This gorgeous city is known not only for its fairs and festivals, picnics and outings, temples and havelies, kite flying and its proud and fearless people but also for their ornaments, colorful costumes, sheep's wool, camel races, and awesome sunset.

Camel Festival: Held in January, the camel festival is very colorful event. It is organized by the Department of Tourism, Art & Culture. It begins with a colorful procession against the backdrop of the Junagarh Fort.
Tourist Places Of Bikaner
Junagarh Fort: The fort was built in 1593 by Raja Rai Singh who a general in the army of Emperor Akbar. The fort is made from red sandstone.
Lalgarh Palace: The palace was built by Maharaja Ganga Singh in the memory of his father Maharaja Lal Singh. Made of Red stone, Lalgarh palace is designed by a British architect Sir Swinton Jacob.
Bhandeshwar Jain Temple: Dedicated to the 23rd Jain Tirthankara, Parsavnathji, the temple was built in 16th century. The temple is the oldest monument of Bikaner. The temple is decorated with rich mirror work and gold leaf paintings.

Camel Breeding Farm: 8 km, One of its own kind in Asia, It is a camel breeding and research center. Its timing is 1500-1700 hrs.
Karnimata Temple: 33 km situated enroute to Jodhpur, This 600 years old temple is dedicated to goddess Durga. Rats scamper freely in the temple and seeing white rat brings good luck.
Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary: 32 km enroute to Jaisalmer,here there flora & fauna are rich with protected species mainly Nilgai (blue bull), chinkara, black buck, sand grouse.
