Maharaja Suraj Mal founded Bharatpur in 1733 AD. The city is named after Bharat, the brother of Lord Ram. The trio of Bharatpur, Deeg and Dholpur has played an important part in the history of Rajasthan. Bharatpur was the major Jat State in Rajasthan. Badan Singh established and founded the fort and palaces of Deeg in 1725. Seven years later, his son laid the foundation nearby of the fort of Bharatpur. Lohagarh fort is one of the main attractions of Bharatpur. This magnificent 18th century fort was built by Raja Suraj Mal. Brij Festival: The prime attraction of Bharatpur, Brij festival is held a few days before Holi, the festival of colors. It is held in honour of Lord Krishna. The attraction of this festival is Raslila dance, the immortal love story of Radha and Krishna.
Lohagarh Fort (Iron Fort): Iron fort was built in the early 18th century and took its name from its impregnable defences, It was made by the founder of Bharatpur Maharaja Surajmal to commemorate his victories over the Mughals and the British.Its gate has an important feature .It is carried away by Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi.but brought back in triumph by the victorious Jat armies from the imperial capital of Delhi to Bharatpur.It combines the Mughal and Rajput architecture. Some beautiful monuments in the fort are Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas, Moti Mahal and Kothi Khas. Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj, inside the fort, were built by Suraj Mal.
Bharatpur Palace: The Palace is a beautiful blend of Mughal and Rajput architecture. It was built by different Maharajas of Bharatpur.
Keoladeo Ghana National Park: Bharatpur is famous for this bird paradise. Formerly known as Bharatpur bird sanctuary, it got its name -Keoladeo because Keoladeo temple of Lord Shiva. The park is spread over an Area of 29 sq. kms and declared as the largest bird sanctuary in India. The Bird Sanctuary attracts birds not only from all over India, but also from far of Europe, Siberia, China and Tibet. Siberian cranes are the U.S.P. of the sanctuary.

Keoladev Ghana National Park: Also known as Bharatpur bird sanctuary, Keoladeo was given the status of national park in 1981. Situated just 2 km from the city of Bharatpur, the park is spread over an area of 232 sq. kms. It is almost 176 km from Delhi. It is a world heritage site.
